Welcome to Antiques & Moore!
This listing is for a beautiful swing handleSterling Silver sugar basket with a fitted cobalt glass liner measuring5 3/4" high (includingupright handle), 3 3/4" high (with handle down) and with a 3 1/2"diameter top.
The silver body of this sugar basket is completely pierced decorated and stands on a pedestal base. The swing handle is decorated with a delicate floral design with a cartouche in the center top for a monogram although it has never been monogramed. The silver is in excellent Estate condition reflecting very little use with the only flaw being a minorscratch/cut on the top of the handle just below theengraved rose. The cut does not go into the edge and is not deep nor is it sharp to the touch. The cobalt liner isa much deeper cobalt that appears in our photos and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.
This wonderful swing handle sugar basket is fully marked with with four marks equally spaced and directly across from each other that read "2176", "The Frank Herschede Co.", "Sterling 3 1/2 in." and a logo that I believe belonged to Graff, Washbourne & Dunn in New York. The Frank Herschede Co. was a jewelry store in Cincinnati and Chicago and althougha number of silver items have this mark, it has not been determined whether they ever manufactured any silver or simply acted as the distributor for these items.
Sugar baskets began to be replaced in the early 19th Century when sugar bowls began to be designed as a part of tea and coffee services. These delicate baskets have never lost their popularity with collectors and highly collected today.
History: The predecessors of Graff, Washbourne & Dunn can be traced back to William Gale who was an active silversmith in New York in 1833. This firmchanged hands several times before being purchased by Graff, Washbourne & Dunn who incorporated. After the death of both Graff and Washbourne, Dunnacquired the stock of both. The company again changed hands several times before being purchased in 1961 by the Gorham Corp.
