DESCRIPTION
The first edition thus, embellished with nineteen full page plates in black and white by well-known American painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish, including the illustrated title page. Dated to copyright 1899 and 1900 to illustrated title page. Dated from inscription, 1899. Collated, complete with two leaves of publishers advertisements to rear.
The celebrated reminiscences of childhood by Kenneth Grahame, following the true first of 1895.
Eighteen tales recounted through charming imageries and metaphors rooted in the Ancient Greece, featuring many characters from Greek mythology; The adults are referred to as the Olympians.
The Prologue and six of the stories appeared previously in The National Observer.
Celebrated for the writing style and for the world created by Grahame, in which the adults have forgotten what it means to be young, and are in continuous warfare with the children. This was a theme that became very popular later on and was explored by other authors.
